Frequently Asked Questions
What is a vocation?
Through baptism, every Christian has a vocation, that is, a call from
God to serve the Church in some specific way. The Gospel calls everyone
to a life of loving self-sacrifice. The Holy Spirit reveals to each
believer his particular vocation. It may be: as a priest, ordained to
serve at the altar, preach the Gospel, and dispense the mysteries of
salvation, as a single person, giving witness to Christ by living a
life directed by Gospel values, as a consecrated religious, embracing
evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, as a married
person, dedicating one’s life and love to another person and sharing
faith within a family. The Holy Spirit manifests one’s vocation
through prayer and the sacraments. The priest’s vocation is recognized
through and interior attraction to the person of Jesus Christ, especially
through the Holy Eucharist. Christ calls His priests saying, “Come
after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
What is a diocesan priest?
Every priest is called by God to live and act in the very person of
His Son, Jesus Christ. The diocesan priest, in union with his bishop,
serves the People of God in many ways: Baptizing people, Celebrating
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Absolving sins through Penance and Reconciliation,
presiding over Marriages, Burying the dead, Anointing the sick, Preaching
the Gospel, Teaching the faith, Counseling the troubled, Visiting the
imprisoned. Diocesan priests serve the local church in various ways
for example: pastors of parishes, campus ministry, elementary and high
school teaching, adult education, hospital chaplaincy, prison chaplaincy,
retreat ministry, diocesan administration, and military chaplaincy.
The priest’s life must be healthy at the human level so as to
offer his whole being with joy and freedom in the Lord’s service.
This means he should maintain strong relationships with family and friends,
take time for leisure and recreation, and pursue his own personal interests.
Above all, the diocesan priest is a man of prayer, finding joy, and
strength in the God who has called him to ordination and service in
the Church. (for more information click here)
What are the qualifications of a diocesan priest?
The basic qualifications are that one must: be a single Catholic man,
have at least average intelligence, be emotionally and physically healthy.
He must have: the desire to follow Jesus Christ and lay down his life
for the Gospel, a love for the fullness of the Catholic faith lived
in communion with his local bishop and the universal, a capacity and
willingness to embrace the gift of celibacy so as to love God’s
people unreservedly, an openness to a total conversion of mind, heart,
and soul. If you are between the ages of 15 and 50, meet the above criteria,
and believe that you may have a vocation to the priesthood, is there
not an obligation to investigate?
What is the role of the Vocation Director?
Because the work of finding and encouraging new candidates for the priesthood
is so very important, the bishops assigns a priest for full-time work
in this area. The priest is the Vocation Director, and he works out
of vocation office. The vocation director is always available to discuss
the possibility of the possibility of the priesthood with any potential
candidate, whether his interest is just an initial curiosity or the
certain desire to apply to the Archdiocese of Mobile. The vocation director
assists interested men in discovering God’s will for their lives.
He also guides a candidate through the application process. Whatever
